#whyistayonmastodon sounds like an giant undecipherable mess of sounds.

#WhyIStayOnMastodon reads out "Why I Stay On Mastodon" 😄

(Reason #44 I stay here: my previous requests like this have been generally well-received, proving that most people are awesome.)

Turns out open is sexy here in New Zealand... stuff.co.nz/environment/104100 And how can you resist getting involved in a project that's building something called a "cacophonator"?

My thoughts on the Linux subsystem on Windows 10... We should be moving incrementally towards more freedom, better ethics, and less centralised autocratic control, not away from it.

Cory Doctorow: *The EU's Copyright Proposal is Extremely Bad News for Everyone, Even (Especially!) Wikipedia*

"The pending update to the #EU #CopyrightDirective is coming up for a committee vote on June 20 or 21 and a parliamentary vote either in early July or late September. While the directive fixes some longstanding problems with EU rules, it creates much, much larger ones: problems so big that they threaten to wreck the #Internet itself."

My uni has a small grant program for open textbooks and other open educational resources. I was privileged to be able to sit on an adjudicating committee and see all the interesting proposals! Results publicized soon. So excited to see these projects come to fruition. #OER #opentextbooks

I always appreciate a deep dive into historical underpinnings of open education. This piece from Weller, Rolfe, DeVries and Jordan is worthy addition to the open education origin story openpraxis.org/index.php/OpenP I annotated with a couple of comments using Hypothesis via.hypothes.is/https://www.op

Love that my favorite Android Masto app, #Tusky, is open source. Love the fact that #Pinafore and #Halcyon exist as alternative web UIs. Love that #Pleroma is coming along well as an alternative #ActivityPub server. Love that the sex worker community on #Switter is actively working on building open source tech that works for their use case. Love to see instances like #OpenSocialAfrica and vis.social.

Y'all inspire me that this open source/free software thing may actually work out in the end. :)

@easegill Yeah - the skills of discernment of knowing when to use "pen and paper" in a digital world also got me thinking the 1st time I saw the video.

Two things in the video (youtu.be/c0xa98cy-Rw) resonated with me. One was that wifi allowed laptops to be put away allowing other tech (paint & paper) to be focused on. Paul Gilster said that being digitally literate meant knowing when to use pen and paper. The other was Henry Jenkins reminding us that the skills are not how we do things with digital technology but what we do with digital technology - creating, engaging, socialising.
